Found my healthy 7 month old Brahma hen still in the coop this morning, perching with tail down and eyes closed. As I carried her to our garage hospital she was loudly "purring" while breathing. Coughing and sneezing, very low energy. Seems hungry, but only picks at the food. I've applied VetRX to her head, near her nostrils, and under her wings. Not sure what else to try? I have also pulled another hen to join her who is couging and sneezing, but is active and eating/drinking well. Any thoughts?!! Thank you!!

I've posted a pic to show the difference in energy levels.

Welcome To BYC!

Have you added any new birds to your flock recently?
Ever had any previous symptoms of respiratory illness?
Any molds/mildew or changes in their environment that could be causing the symptoms?
Has she been consistently laying eggs? When was her last egg?
Do you notice any facial swelling, mucous from the nostrils, bubbles or pus in the eyes?
Where are you located in the world?

I would check inside her beak for canker or lesions, make sure her crop is emptying overnight and feel her abdomen for bloat or fluid.
With the respiratory symptoms, she may have a respiratory disease - Mycoplasma and Infectious Bronchitis are a couple that spread through the flock fairly quickly. Symptoms of Mycoplasma can be treated with antibiotics like Tylosin or Tiamulin. IB is a virus so has to run it's course, but often there is a secondary infection which may require medication. If vet care is an option it would be a good idea to have some testing.

You have new birds and they were treated for disease - what was the disease and treatment?

Can you get some photos of the crust buildup in the corners of her beak, the inside of her beak and her face too?
