Just noticed one of my hybrid girl who is most likely a year old now is having issues breathing I noticed one nostril is swollen and has a bit of yellow discharge, she was fine yesterday and I did not hear or see any of this when I checked her!

She is eating and drinking and still picking on certian girls but I'm sure she most likely has a RI and don't know what to use wither heavy hitter meds or herbal etc. I know I need to most likely call a vet but who knows if my vet really deals with chickens or if I was told bad info. Besides I don't think I can get down there as quick as I want to so need something to give her!

I have a multi-vitamin I can give her, they also have vitamins and such put in their water, they are all on layers pellets and get the odd corn scratch mix once in awhile. My flock has not really been sick since I have had them and want to stop it before it gets worse.

It's either going to run its course and clear up or you will need antibiotics...do your feed type stores sell antibiotics?

In The Backyard Chickens Health Pack, there is medicine for this kind of thing. There’s different medicines in there, some to put in the water, and there’s one to run under their wings. Don’t worry, my hen had a respiratory infection too and this helped her.

We got ours I think at tractor supply. You could probably get it at your feed store.

Respiratory diseases can be from viruses or bacteria, and only the bacterial ones will respond to an antibiotic. In the UK those are most likely only available from a vet. Tylosin, oxytetracycline, and sulfa antibiotics can be helpful in treating MG or coryza. Infectious bronchitis or other viruses would have to run their course over several weeks.

Try to clean out the nostril with some saline and Qtips or an orange stick. Hydrogen peroxide may soften secretions to help with removal. Be sure to use some probiotics or plain yogurt to help with her gut health, esp. when using an antibiotic. Make sur that she is drinking fluids well.

Don't know if my feed stores sell that kinda thing after all I'm in the UK (the same people who brought you the sugar tax because they are worried about health but seem stupid and tone deaf that chemically derived sugar is worse for you then real that and must want to tell you what and how to eat, waiting for fast food places to be taxed and or run out of the country!).

LoveDatChickenLife we don't have TSC here in the UK that might be a good thing what with all the mess ups they do with chicks.

Thanks Eggcessive I totally blanked the saline and qtip thing (orange stick?) there is some herbal gut health stuff for chickens I can buy at my feed store as well a breathe free liquid from global herbs that might help.

it's fustrating as they seemed fine yesterday and it's only her for now!

Orange sticks are the little wooden sticks that you use with manicures, but you may also find metal manicure sticks. Someone else here today has a similar post about the blocked nostril. She has been treating with antibiotics (Tylan then tetracycline for MG, metronidazole for canker) for several months on and off, and it comes back, common in respiratory diseases, most of which are chronic. Getting the secretions and/or stuck feed mixed with secretions, softened with peroxide or saline for a few minutes, then attacking it with a reaming tool is the best way to attack this. Some birds could have an abnormally small nasal opening.
