I have 3 silkies 11 weeks old, 3 silkies 8 weeks old and 3 red sex links 6 weeks old. It all started with one chick having a closed eye. Well, it's now progressed. All the chicks are sick to varying degrees and symptoms. The symptoms are: having a hard time getting breath, looks like they are gulping for air; wheezing, rumbley sounds when breathing; coughing; sneezing; gunk coming out of nostrils; one or both eyes closed; gunk on eyes sticking them shut; swollen and red eyes; a sour, acidy odor, which is the worse on the silkie that has the worse rumbling when she breathes and coughing. I noticed the first symptoms Saturday morning. I went and got Duramycin and put in their water. They just progressively have gotten worse. So today I went and got Tylan 200 and gave them their first injection. I think I'm going to go with the plan of 1/4 ml 2 x day since they are so sick. Is that the right thing to do? Also, while holding them to give them a shot, I noticed that on some, not all, their crop was puffy. Does this have to do with the infection? I'm also wondering if I stop the Duramycin in their water or keep doing that along with Tylan injections. Any help would be appreciated. I feel so helpless!

There are other things that can cause the symptoms you see. With the addition of the Crop, it could be a mold issue.

If the anti biotics do not help, then it is probably not a bacteria. Another thing to check is the ventilation of their coop. Amonia can cause breathing problems.

I hope they get better. If one dies, check into sending it in for a Necropsy. Her in California the UC system will test them free of charge for small flocks.

Thanks, Ron. Their coop is very well ventilated, so I don't think that would be a problem. I'm hoping to see some improvement with the antibiotics! I'll do some research on the mold issue.

Another question I have that I haven't really found an answer to on Google is whether my dogs or us humans can get passed these infections from the chicks.

I'm hoping it doesn't happen, but if one does die, I will check into sending it in for a necropsy.
