Respiratory Questions

I recently introduced 11 new hens into my family of 6 hens. They have been doing great until yesterday following a fairly large storm. 4 of the newly added chickens seem to have some respiratory issues. I have pulled the four and have them in seperate dog kennels in my garage. I have given them each Tylan 50 injectable .5 cc. I'm not sure how many times a day I should do this, for how long, if that is the right dosage and if I should medicate all chickens just in case. Also what do you do with any eggs they may lay during this time and how long do I dispose of eggs if that is what I'm suppose too. HELP???

If you are good at injections--good. If they are grown hens I rather give them 1ml oral---you can do this twice a day. If not hatching, I discard the eggs for about a week after I stop the medicine. Good Luck

They are all grown hens. The ones that I can hear the rattle in their breathing are 3 years old. I had assistance from someone that has given shots before. The injections were given on their back between their wings and lower neck. Parted feathers and pinched skin and gave shot just under skin area. We made sure we weren't giving shot into vein or anything. So I can give them 1 ml of Tylan 50 injectable orally?

I never give with injections---but I thought the breast area was the best. Yes, all mine that get it get it oral---might take a little longer to get in their system but works good for me and I have had over 1200 at one time------but only 1 once in a while that needs some doctoring. I draw it out with the needle, remove the needle from the bottle then draw a little more to clear the needle then remove the needle and ease the medicine into the back corner of their mouth while holding their head up some and hold till they swallow---which is usually with-in seconds.

1200!!!! And I'm overwhelmed with 17! I can't even wrap my head around that many. Thank you for all the info. Out of curiosity, what do you do to get rid of flies?

A lot of those 1200 were grow outs----maybe a few weeks old to 6 months old(door steps)---hatched every week and saved some every week to grow out. Only about 200 to 250 were adults/breeders/layers. I was going for 3000 plus, But the bird-flu scare 2 years ago changed all that. Now I have 62 empty chicken pens with about 100 chickens in 5 other pens. I never have a problem with flies??

Well we do! We did before we even had chickens. Lots of farm animals around us. I clean out their nesting boxes, coop and water weekly; sometimes more than that, but still have fly issues.

Well I did have a neighbor that had cows and horses about 200 to 300 yards away, but still no problems. Now with the brooders that had larger chicks and holding pans---held spilt water and poop----If I did not dump/clean them every couple days some flies would collect. But these brooders are almost 1/2 mile from my chicken yards. Maybe its my sandy loom soil that does not hold much water after a rain that makes a difference??
