A friend of mine emailed me today to ask me what I thought about this, and since I didn't have a clue, thought I'd ask the pros!...
1) What type of bird , age and weight.
1 - 2 year old birds, she has naked necks, ee's, and rir's, not sure quanitity of each that has died.
2) What is the behavior, exactly.
Coughing, sneezing, a high pitched squeeking sound, and then they drop dead. The first two died last week, and she didn't even notice any symptoms before she just found them dead. Also, a few seem to have had whatever this is, and have recovered.
3) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma.
No.
4) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation.
Nothing she knows of.
5) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all.
Layer feed, scratch, plain water. She hasn't told me if she has noticed a drop in feed consumed (she has 40 - 50 in a VERY large outdoor area, with a coop for night time, so I doubt she would notice if 1 or 2 birds stopped eating)
6) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc.
She doesn't say if she's noticed any unusual stool around.
7) What has been the treatment you have administered so far?
Again, all she said was that she added antibiotics to the waterers, but she's at work, so I haven't been able to ask further. I am assuming tetracycline, since that's pretty much all we can get around here.
8 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet?
She will treat herself.
9) If you have a picture of the wound or condition, please post it. It may help.
10) Describe the housing/bedding in use
Like I said above, HUGE outdoor area, with a coop for night time, uses pine shavings for bedding.
Thanks guys!!
