One example is that garage door installers receive their supplies on very heavy duty 24" x10 foot pallets that work great for framing runs or for roofs. They have to pay to get rid of them and will happily call you when they want to get rid of them. I also got 24- 16 foot 2x6's and 38- 8 foot 2x4's when our neighbor replaced his garage, saved from the dumpster (reducing the weight of his dumpster bill) made the price of my 8x16 coop less than $500. Looking forward to all the great ideas from others.

Hi Jean! It is always a fun construction project to build your own coop! Sounds like a process but I bet it will look cool when you finish! Keep us updated on it and post pictures when you finish! Congrats on the retirement! :) Welcome to BYC
 
Hello! Welcome! :wee Well, aren't you super frugal :D I am the same way. I made my little coop for almost free. Bought the osb for the roof, shingles, and wire. Everything else was left over from other projects or scrimped and scrounged from various locations. Mine is much smaller than yours but I am proud of it! Notice the feather explosion 😂 Gotta love molting season! This is the day I finished putting the 12g welded wire over the 1/4" hardware cloth. A large attached run is in the works, also. Scrimping and scrounging for those materials currently 😉

I also love getting free materials! My main coop is built entirely from wood recycled from shipping crates that were used to ship large machinery to the place I work. I only had to buy the plywood for the floors and roof. That's a great idea about getting large pallets from garage door installers, I'll have to make a few phone calls!

I'm looking forward to when I can retire and spend my days working on my favorite hobbies.
