~ Retired and Starting My Future In The Foothills ~

That neighbor has nothing better to do!

Yes if you can, enclosed that porch so they don't get to perch into the living quarters. Maybe make a hitching posts out for them, all lining up on the front porch area but not so close. Maybe one day, you will get a rider and horse and the hitching post would be ideal for any horse to be tied up! With all those chickens lining up on the post, you can be sure they are watch dogs!
I LIkE that idea! Of course, I can't have a horse of my own, as it's clear in the Ordinances a horse is not allowed on less than an acre... (I still announce "Giddyup!" to the flock when I open the people door to enter the coop on weekend days.) But a nice, long hitching post in front of the porch...Hmmmmmm. With a row of chickens perched there. I do so like that image! :D

I was thinking about you yesterday as I worked in my moms yard.

My mom had told me that the neighbor (A) down the street had complained about the next door neighbors (B) new chickens. The other neighbor (C) just made them a new coop I think it was 10x12. Turns out they had gotten 30 chicks for the coop....and more than a few roosters in that bunch. The neighbors(A) can hear the chickens fighting and fussing and it is driving them nuts, so they complained (not sure if just to those people or the county) The neighbors(B) (with the chickens) are not the most friendly people on the block, not sure they talk to anyone and the husband is a real special kind of guy-not. Anyway, I was hearing someone "practicing" a drum set all day....I figured it was you know who (Mr Neighbor B) Figured he was letting the neighbors (A) know how he felt about the complaint...turns out it was the HS getting ready for game...lol

After the deck is completed, he'll enclose my front porch with mosquito screen and install a screen door at each end. (My flock will be allowed access on the new deck, instead, as it will be easier to clean.)

Oh thank goodness on the mosquito netting! It'll be SO nice to sit out there this summer and drink iced tea (wine coolers???) and not have to get eaten alive! That's a great porch for relaxing.

Hey! Maybe I can hire a HS marching band to go up and around and down and back again on my driveway!! All on private property, so there's no public byway blocked, or used. Wonder if the neighbors would mind that, every couple of days? No, in the evening, about dinner time... before I get home from work....

Naaahhhhhh. Not spending a cent on doing anything but improving my property or protecting it, myself and my animals. But it's a fun idea, isn't it??

I got home from work to discover a clean porch (Farmer Lew had been here with his power washer earlier in the day) and a stack of lumber on the side of the driveway.

This totally mitigated the disappointment at hearing from the company installing the propane heater this afternoon, apologizing for not having the model I wanted in stock in its Sacramento warehouse. It has to be shipped from the East Coast, so we've scheduled the installation for Monday, February 13th. (I guess Californians don't usually purchase the small models.

If I wanted something that could heat MORE than ttwice the square footage of my house, they'd be able to accommodate me immediately.)

At least there aren't any freeze days forecast for the next week. We can hope it stays above freezing the week afterward, as well.

But it is kinda nippy tonight. I had to turn on one of the space heaters when I got home.

I LOVE Linda's porch, and can just see the two of you sitting there of a warm evening, sipping wine coolers, watching chickens as the sun sets

And watch it at the comfort of your enclosed porch..watching the chickens getting up on the hitching post, juggling for the best space and greet people coming up from the driveway!

Thanks to Farmer Lew for power spraying the porch...That would get you started on the enclosure with a clean slate!

Since they don't have the smaller unit, would they be willing to sell you a larger unit at the smaller unit's price? If you were interested, that is ... because Feb. 13 is a long, looooong time to wait, given how cold it is .. right? (cue the violins...)

'Tis most fortunate that we are having a most mild winter this year, so I think she'll be okay until the 13th. Besides, having the larger unit would cost more over the long-term to operate and might take up so much space that it would be close enough to the book cases that will be flanking it on either side that it might cause a fire hazard. I think Linda will be much happier to have the unit she has her heart set on.

I think, however, that they are going to give her the upgraded unit (a couple more bells & whistles) in lieu of the larger unit as a courtesy for making her wait 2 extra weeks for heat.

It's going to look beautiful against that white brick wall with the wooden bookcases on either side of it.

I am loving every minute of watching this entire process come together for her. Few people deserve this more than she does.

I'm glad they're upgrading the unit she wants - good point about the extra costs, and after all she's been through, having a house fire is NOT a chapter I'd like to see in this story! It will look beautiful - can't wait to see pix!
