Okay, hi from Oklahoma! I just retired from education now I'm ready to do new adventures! So, how about raising chickens!! I have 4 babies right now and am preparing their "home sweet hom"e coop! I'd like the top 5 tips/hints for new urban farmers... Ready.... GO!

Hello and :welcome

We are glad you joined us! That's wonderful! So I'm assuming you would like tips for baby chicks? Well I might go out of the box on this, but I love to talk chicken! I have raised so many! Right now I have 21 including roosters and babies. My tips for raising backyard chickens is

1- Let them free roam at least 1 hour a day
2- If you give them scratch that will help them lay more eggs
3- I'm terrible at this

Hehe sorry. Maybe you should go check out the site! I'm sure you'll find a lot of interesting information to help you with your backyard flock. If you'd like you can message me with some questions (I'm better that way) and I'd love to answer them for you! Or if you just want to talk chicken you can message me, I love doing that too.

Well again :welcome

Oh man, the pressure is on, lol.
1. Don't put your chickens in crowded conditions. Be sure the coop and run are BIG! They'll be more comfortable which means less picking on each other and it will be easier for you to clean.
2. Protect your birds from predators as best you can. Don't use chicken wire, use hardware cloth and bury an "apron" of it underground to stop diggers from getting in.
3. Have a first aid kit ready, accidents happen.
4. Don't over-do treats. Limit them to no more than 10% of the chicken's daily intake so they will fill up more on nutritional feed and less on junk.
5. Remember...they will lay when they are good and ready to lay!

How'd I do Teach?
