Retired Flower Farmer

Ducks in general are good bug eaters but the breed i have most experience with is Anconas. They are calmer and I think the only breed where the ladies rule. They are led by a female to find the best feed, rather then the males who want to fight over the females for sex. This makes them good garden ducks. I usually don't allow them in the garden until my plants have put down some good roots, so they will survive a nip or two and not be pulled out easily by the feeding ducks. My duckyard was right next to the garden and the ducks had room to hang out under the shrubbery while they waited for garden time. It was easy to train them to come out in the garden when the gate was opened or to stay in the duckyard when I didn't want them in the garden. I restricted their garden time until my dahlias had rooted in and were growing good, then the ducks had day long free range. Both yards were surrounded by strong fences so I only lost ducks to eagles and hawks. That was heart breaking.

Congratulations on your new adventure! I am moving from Ohio to Connecticut in June to be near the grandchildren also. It's hard to leave a home, friends, activities behind...but we must trust that good things will come! I wish you peace and happiness.....and a beautiful garden! Welcome to BYC.

Welcome to the flock! My closest town is also called Warren but I'm in Australia. I'm currently training my 2 indian runners to be garden ducks. Look forward to seeing you around the threads
Greetings from Warren to Warren! My Warren is a small community along the Columbia River on the Oregon side. It is not far from my kids who live in Portland. We are back several miles from the river in a rural neighborhood.

MOssyrock! Hey, I grew up on a dairy farm near Morton! I've been gone from there since 1964, and my parents have passed away but yes, I certainly know where Mossyrock is!

I miss my home and community where I lived from 1974 until last December, but I am kind of excited about a new community and being able to visit with the kids easier! We just all got together for a birthday lunch for 3 of us, and no one had to drive much over an hour!

Wonderful!! I have 2 grandchildren in Connecticut and 4 in North Carolina....so it's 10-11 hour drive to see any of them! I do not have any family left in Ohio so it's time to make a change. It's important to have time to build memories with those kiddos! Blessings to you and your family.
