Hi y'all! So I'm not quite new here or to chicken farming, but it has been so long since I was last on, I forgot my username and it looks like my account was purged. It's all good, though, as we moved from California to Texas almost two years ago and have not had a flock since around 2013. We're back at it and the best part is here in Texas we don't have a homeowner's association and anti-chicken city ordinances to contend with. No more underground chicken farming!

We're adopting a flock from some neighbors who lost their house in a fire. We've been caring for the birds since September and decided we might as well just bring 'em home. I'm in the process of constructing a new coop (I'll post pictures when I have something to photograph) and should be up and running in a couple weeks.

We are looking forward to having chickens again and I wouldn't think of having birds without being a part of BackYardChickens!

Cheers,

Aaron

Thanks y'all! It's great to be back!

The coop build is underway. I'm using a mix of reclaimed materials and new materials - admittedly more new stuff this go round - and only have the floor framed. I'll definitely post pictures as things progress.

We plan on supplementing our adopted flock and I am wondering where y'all might recommend buying chicks. I realize there are probably better forums to post this question, but I thought I'd get it out here as I start my research. Anyway, I can always default to the local feed stores, but the selection there is what it is. We recently discovered the Swedish Flower Hen and like several of the traits of that breed. We also like Americaunas, Rhode Island Reds, Barred Rocks and bantam Silkies. We've had mixed luck with feed stores in the past and I doubt I'll find an SFH at Tractor Supply, so your thoughts are much appreciated.
