I just got 2 chicks from local feed store (not TSC). They were expected and delivered to the store and labeled as Rhode Island Blues. I already purchased and doing a little research now see most people showing gray or black chicks. Mine are definitely Red as were the entire box at the store. Anyone else had red RIB s at one week or less in age?

Sold by Mt. Healthy under that name.. funny their website shows one red chick in the mix of black and blue..

Looks like other hatcheries are calling them production blues.

What little I know about genetics.. it's RIR cross to blue Australorp.. red will act like black and throw mostly Black and Blue perhaps but the occasional red if both parents were carrying that gene, hidden.

Usually chicks are visibly grey when they hatch blue like the under part of the chick fluff.. I agree that one does not appear to be blue.. and it LOOKS red.. Noting, I have hatched lots of BBS colored chicks NOT owned this particular hybrid.

They (RIB, seems like a misleading name in all honesty) look like lovely birds! :love

It's also possible that a couple different chicks got mixed in at the hatchery.. if they needed some to complete the order and might have stated so since MANY ask at order if substitutions are acceptable if needed to ship on expected date.

I just noticed the ENTIRE box was red.. possible the hatchery shipped something else all together?! It happens. :pop
