Rhode Island Red chick pictures

Quote:
Not to be rude but that is incorrect. The birds you are referring to are RED SEX-LINKS, not production reds. Red sex-links are, however, crosses that involve RIR, that much is true.

But production reds are Rhode Island Reds that have been bred more for egg production rather than adhering to the breed standard.

Sorry, that was a bit sloppy. I intended the quotes around "Production Reds" to be of the air quote variety indicating that some people may incorrectly refer to these crosses as production reds. But, I fell into the same trap when I later said "production cross", I should have said something like "these crosses that are egg producing machines".

Red Sexlinks are called by many names, Golden Comet, Red Star, Cinnamon Queen, and Gold Star come to mind. Some of these refer to specific crosses and some, I imagine, are just different names given by different hatcheries (though I could easily be wrong about that).

Thats not a problem.

And I think you are right about the different names for different hatcheries.

I think you are correct about different names for different crosses... It just doesn't do their customers justice, it leaves them confused. Just like my nephew, he thinks he has REAL RIRs and they are NOT.. It's clear that he has some kind of productions/ laying machine but none of the true qualities of a RIR.. And the bad thing (too me) HE would not have cared..one way or the other. BUT he is now telling everyone he has RIR..

They are for a laying flock but he has already told two people that they can buy some of his RIR chicks next spring!!! So the confusion will continue to spread... It's almost as bad a Ameraucanas, Araucanas and Easter Eggers!!

Just found this thread (I , too, was told_from TSC employee_my 3 chicks are RIR to find out they are getting whitish feathers!). I can't believe your chick pics at 6 wks. It's amazing the chicks grow that fast. I have 6. The "RIR"s are approx. 2 weeks old. The other 3 (supposedly Amberlinks) are 2 weeks old.

I got my RIR from a feed store. She is a sweetie. I was concerned about how much black she has growing into her wings. Is that normal?
I also was told I was getting an Auraucana from that same chick day, and the people on that thread said its an EE. So who knows what I got
