I am from Rhode Island and vacation in Little Compton. For those of you that know the history of the Rhode Island Red, (they were first bred here in Adamsville, a tiny section of Little Compton). Anyway I took a ride through town and found this....a monument for the Little ladies and Roos......enjoy!

My three Rhode Island Reds are the Deanies, named because that is what our family calls people who are pesky and silly. They always find a way to get themselves in trouble, and are so curious!

I've heard so many great things about RIRs, but I'm new at raising chickens so what do you guys think?

Rhode Island Reds vary with the strain (they vary a ton!). They tend to be very out-going, even aggressive, though my girls are all nice to me. They are pretty, good layers, good for meat, good foragers, hard in all weather conditions, and pretty hard against disease.
There are two main strains, the original Rhode Island Red and Production Reds (hatchery bred birds used for laying and meat, they don't fit the standard).

Here are some RIRs we use to have. They loved treats!
