they are both about 6 weeks old but one is a lot bigger and already has bigger comb and waddles :/

The small one is the smallest of all 6 chicks though. The other chicks are black and blue sexlinks.

The first one is definitely a cockerel
Thanks we were afraid of that 😓 and the local feed store told us they were sexed. This one has always been the most fearless with us too and throws pecks when we try to pick it up.. I hear Rhode Island Red roosters can be real aggressive. We just had to get rid of 8 other cockerels it’s such a pain.

I got a batch of 16 straight run RIR hoping to get enough pullets to split between my two males. I got 10 cockerels and 6 pullets . . .and yes they are feisty. In my case there were so many it was hard to get hands on with all of them every day, so I'm not entirely sure it's a breed trait.

Idk either but we originally got 10 olive eggers also straight run 8 were cockerels and non were aggressive. 2 of them were cream leg bars and they were pretty docile up until we got rid of them at 16 weeks.

It’s always a risk even with sexed chicks unless you get sex-links of some kind. The only RIR I ever had was a hen and she was very assertive. She took over the top hen spot before she was even full grown.

Yeah the rest we got are blue and black sexlink. My favorite so far are the black sex-link. They are not too scared of us and haven’t pecked us. The blue sexlinks are too flighty and scared of us and the Rhode Island reds are too fiesty. The Rhode Island Red female chick is the smallest of all of them so it’ll be entertaining to see if she will be the top hen and how all that will unfold!

I'm aware a few males might still pop up in a sexed batch, but trying to rehome 10 has been impossible. I also realized if someone wants a rooster, they want a rooster, not a cockerel.
