rhode island red or buff orpington?

RIR over the BO anyday. Someone forgot to tell ours to be good natured. I also love the cochins. Talk about fluff!

Yeah I like to keep at least two of each breed, it looks nicer.

Then I keep putting them together on the perch at night and in no time the breeds stick with each other automatically.

I have quite an assortment.

My first BOs seemed skittish but that is because I didnt get them till they were about 5 months old. The younger ones I sit in the pen with them and they are getting used to me and seem a lot more friendly. I have two RIRs at 2 1/2 months and they have always been very friendly and inquisitive, but that may be because they think I am their mother. The only thing I have 'heard' is that RIR roos can get mean and protective of their flock. I have no experience, just something I heard.

Good Luck

We bought a dozen BO's along with 25 rainbow layers. Our buffs were the worst pickers of the group. They were definitely not my favorites.

Putting my two cents in for my turkens... they were my nicest birds, gorgeous eggs, and cute on top of that!

Hard decision as I love both of them but I'd have to pick the Buffs. I have 3 Buffs and 3 RIRs and the Buffs are just more friendly. All my Buffs are very calm and sweet and the RIR's are skittish and very standoffish. As far as looks, I love them both. None of my flock has starting laying yet so I can't say about the eggs but I'm hoping to have a lot of eggs year round from the mixed group!

I'm really sorry about the loss of your Buff....

the rhode island reds would be a good choice if youre after eggs theyre good reliable layers and lay nice brown eggs.ive got 3 of them myself.

i do see what some of u are saying about slightly aggressive rir roosters...hmm.. wow, i wish one of my buffs would go broody for once... in the years i have had chickens the only one i had go broody was a golden polish hen, once,,, and had one baby.. lol

someone mentioned barred rocks.. of the ones i have,, i really dont like them.. they are BEAUTIFUL i love her markings.. but they seem to get picked on alot, and they arent as fat or fluffy as the other breeds. they just seem skinny and smaller than rir, bo, jersey giants etc... but shes friendly to me..
