Rhode Island Red Thread!

geez, their coloring is almost black! never saw one that dark...all that i have ever had were bright red and orangeish red. are they mixed because even the comb is different?

heather, What 99% of us have, who buy our chicks at hatcheries, feed stores and backyard breeders is a RIR that is far, far from true show type. Chris raises true, heritage show quality birds. Yes, they are very dark. The Red is supposed to be dark, not orange like many birds sold today.

The Red comes in a standard comb that everyone is used to, but Chris also has some rare birds in rose combs, I believe.

Heather,
No there not mixed, there pure Rhode Island Red's bred to there breed standard.
The Reds that I have are out of breeder stock and quite different than ones from a hatchery.
The Rhode Island Red comes in two different varieties, a Single Comb variety like the young rooster in picture 4 and a Rose Comb variety like the birds in pictures 1 - 3.

Here are some pictures of young Reds, you can see there quite dark as young also.

Correct,
The rose comb is quite rare, I think there might be 50 breeding age birds in the U.S. through out the winter.

When the R.I. Red was first being bred there were 3 comb types, Single, Rose and Pea Comb. The Pea Comb Reds are no longer around.

I am surprised, quite frankly, at a couple of little RIR I picked up at a feed store this past spring. I fully expected them to be run-of-the-mill production reds, ie, rust orange birds. To my complete surprise, they feathered out very, very dark with some shine. One is rather brick shaped, has the alligator tracks down the front of her her very yellow legs, etc. I am very surprised. All quite unexpected.

She wouldn't "show", but golly, what a great looking hatchery pullet and she's gonna be big too. She's a tough one to photograph and I'm not very good, but I'll see if I can get a photo of her that does her justice.
