Rhode Island Red Thread!

Pics
They are standard size large fowl.

I know, NOT helpful, huh?

But, if you go with the measurements for a standard coop, you will be perfect.

You need a minimum of 18 inches above the perch, especially if they will fly up to the perch. You might want a bit more head space if you live where it can get very hot.

If your perch is easily removable, you could get by with it being only 6 inches above the floor.

A nest box is usually a 12inch cube, but variations of that work well (a little smaller is OK). Keep the nest box entrance below the level of the perch.

If you are housing several hens, it might save more space to make only one nest box that is 12x24 inches. That way, three can squeeze in if they want. Look up community nest boxes on this site for some ideas.

Good luck!

We moved our RIR's to their new coop. They just turned 8 weeks old. We really enjoy watching them.

At what age do RIR roosters start crowing generally?  Also are they more of a morning or evening crower?  Or both?

These for the most sort aren't questions you can associate with a certain breed. There is no way to tell when he is going to crow, that just depends on personality. In general rooster can start crowing anywhere from 3 weeks to a year. But the most common time frame is 3 months to 8 month

Good morn!

Looking for someone willing to send me some photos of:

- Rhode Island Red adult(s); either gender will do! Side profile standing would be awesome if you are able.
- RIR chick(s), day olds if possible.

Looking for a way to compare how very nice and rich dark red the feathers are on this breed!

Want to post them to another BYC breed thread to show the RIR's uniqueness so asking your permission to "cross post" these photos.

Please PM and I will send you my e-mail address.

Thank you most kindly.

Hi jennyg

I say there's signs of wattles forming under the beak, the legs look mighty thick and the comb is very prominent. I say your red is a cockerel.

Looks like Rosie might be a Ross. I received some good advice on here about RIR roos. I'm not sure what age yours is but when they are chicks roos tend to have white on them some where, and when their feathers start coming in, the roos tail feathers are shorter than the hens. Your chicks look about the same age as mine. Mine are 5 weeks and I had rooster in the bunch and one other one that I am still not real sure. This is my little guy at 3 1/2 or 4 weeks. He has grown a lot in a little over a week from this picture.
