Rhode Island Red Thread!

We bought two RIR's back in March. One died the very next day. So sad.

My grandson was heartbroken.

The one that survived loves to stay in your hand or on your arm but you have to catch her first which I think is pretty funny. She is not about 6 weeks old and doing well.

Alrighty, I got my first RIR and buff orpington to add to my cochins. I needed a couple of good egg layers to make up for having good brooders.. anyways... I was promised at the feed store where I purchased my new littles ones, that they were all girls. I was also promised that with my cochins. Well, a few weeks after getting my cochins, I realized, three had little tail feathers, and one did not. Now full grown, I see the one that did not have the tail feathers early on, is indeed a roo. Now, I got my cochins, from a neighbor, who had no experience sexing chickens. The feed store said all of theirs were professionally sexed before shipping. Well I know one or two roo will get through, and I think I got the one that did..

My little RIR has no tail feathers, while my buff does. They are two weeks old, and little buffs are noticeable. This is my first experience with RIR and buffs. I dont know if they grow differently, or what, but I am going to be really upset if I have another roo! Please help me! The first pic is of the RIR, second is of the buff orpington, just showing the difference in their tail feathers..

Not sure about your rir but I came across a Canadian site where buffs were shown at a young age. Roo's tend to not have tail feathers at 4 weeks where hens do.

Some pics of my new baby chickens. I have 2 that are suppose to be RIRs but they are not very red yet and are just from a backyard chickens raiser so am wondering if they are normal for two week old RIRs.

The first picture is of the one with the least red out of the two.

The second is the redder chick with one of my Colombian chicks.

They might be "production reds" which is a mostly Rhode Island Red which has been bred with production in mind.

Still very nice birds, but they do tend to be a great deal lighter in color than a true Rhode Island.
