Rhode Island White Thread

So many breeds, so few dedicated breeders.

Just my thought? Many want a variety of breeds and are not really into devoting time to one specific breed. Myself I keep a dedicated flock of Delaware but also a second flock of mixed breeds. Example EE's for colored eggs and Birchen Marans for dark brown. It's easy to see which is which. They mix well together and because I have the EE's with only a marans rooster I can still work on that breed.

I always suggest two coops one for a rare and critical breed and one for lawn candy of various breeds.

I can see me with one breed and maybe 5 or 6 pens and shooting for everyone of them looking alike, but again I like white chickens what do you expect ???

Well I finally had a few minutes to take some not so good pictures of some of my Rhode Island Whites that were hatched in late February.

Terrible picture but I wanted you to notice the one on the left how nice and open her tail is...most of them that I have seen seem to have really tight pinched tails.

I still have a long ways to go with my line of RIW's but I think I have a pretty good start on them with this batch of chicks. This group is what I call RIW-1. I am just starting to hatch RIW-2's so that will give me two different males on the same female.

Some of my birds have somewhat pinched tails too. My original male is about 3 1/2 yrs old. One of his sons is in the same pen as he is in. They don't fight so I'm leaving well enough alone. I haven't hatched many RIW's this year. I have to get rid of some of my standard RIR's, RSL's and barnyards to make room for the chicks. I just love them all but know I have to get rid of some birds.

Cmom,

I hear you on needing to remove some birds from the farm. I have roughly 125 adults and over 400 chicks now in the various breeds. Last three days has been cull, cull, cull for we have a bird auction on Saturday and that is the best and easiest way for me to get ride of birds. Unfortunately I am taking all of my Barnevenlders so I can have room and a place to put the RIW's. Also taking my 2 yr old Welsummer hens and some of the columbians that I will not be using for breeding next year. It is hard to remove breeds or birds but you have to if you are going to be a successful breeder.

So good luck in the culling.

Rob
