Rhut Roh, Chicken Math!!

I bought 4 Crested Cream Legbars from a local breeder and 2 barnevelders that she had hatched out from shipped in eggs.

I ended up selling the Barnevelders because the hen was mismarked (barred/partridge instead of laced)

THEN here is where chicken math took over

I bought 12 (+3 extras) Delaware eggs from a breeder in NC, 4 Crested Cream Legbar eggs from a breeder in Washington State and got 4 Sizzle eggs as part of the price for the Barnevelders (they will be sold as 3 breeds is enough for me) AND 12 Barnevelder eggs and 4 chicks from a breeder in NY

Husband says "What happened to just getting 6-10 chicks???"

Well..... it got a hold of me again! I knew our LFS (local feed store) was getting chicks in, so I just wanted to "see".

And then... I came home with 2 Easter Eggers. The people at the LFS were insistent that they were Ameraucanas, I'm just guessing they don't know the truth. No biggie! When I added them to the first 3, an original was running around brutalizing the EE's.

So... I went back to LFS to get 1 more. and I came home with 1 buff orpington, 1 white leghorn, and a buff cochin. 1 guy at the store tried to tell me the ones with feathered legs were orpingtons. I knew he clearly had no clue.

I decided to switch to a red light. I can not believe how fast things settled down! The chicks were calmer and clearly resting better. Everybody is happy and doing well.

Sadly, the 2 Swedish Flower I got from a "breeder" had almost the same exact markings as the EE's at the feed store. No puffy cheeks though. I will still love them regardless of breed. But I would not drive 45min each way and pay $20 a piece for what I got 3 minutes from home for $2.50.

My hubby works out of town for a couple weeks at a time. He misses out on the baby stage cuz they grow SOOO fast.

Really, I don't know what I am doing with so many chickens. We rarely eat eggs or chicken and don't have much friends or family in our area. And a lot of people in this area are selling eggs already. I will share with my neighbors though. Guess I'm not in it for the $. But maybe I better start paying attention to what it's costing me since hubby is hoping to retire within a couple years. Feed for 3 was no big deal. But now I am at 11 and have at least 16 coming in August.

It's a beautiful day here on the north coast. And I love spring! Longer days mean more time I get to spend outside.
