Thank youCongratulations. yeah, I know a bit late...
I wish I knew what.It is hard to relax when they do that. Something definately came after them if they reacted like that. Stay on guard.
Had a sparrow hawk take two attempted strikes here this evening. It go hold of Myth, but Myth ran with the hawk trying to hold on. Myth is a bit shocked but when I found her and carried her back to Notch her rooster I couldn't see any injuries. I'm going to have a better look in a while.I wish I knew what. There's not a lot of predation here. Snakes, yes. Lizards, yes. Raptors, yes. I've never lost a bird to a predator, thank God! Eggs to pythons, yes ~ & it took 4 men to remove it!
Feed to pigeons, yes. I'm hoping it's not someone's dog on the loose.
They don't alarm like that for my cats, & Marlow not @ all. They do for Kirby but he likes to tease them & it's more a Keep your eye on that boyo, rather than Red alert! Red Alert!
Oh gosh! Another one! I'd be a nervous wreck.Had a sparrow hawk take two attempted strikes here this evening. It go hold of Myth, but Myth ran with the hawk trying to hold on. I think the Sparrow Hawk has seen the chicks and those they can kill easily.
Chicken life; it ain't easy.Oh gosh! Another one! I'd be a nervous wreck.
Not even when their lives are more restricted.Chicken life; it ain't easy.
Myth won't unfortunately. She's a baby killer. She is the most unpopular hen here. None of the hens with chicks will let her anywhere near their chicks. I think they know but I have no way of proving it.Not even when their lives are more restricted.I'm still impressed that your chickens are managing to escape. I can't believe people think chickens are stupid ~ there being the occasional exception.
Will she pass on the knowledge gained from this experience to her chicks & how does that work?
All this stuff is going in your book, right? I figure this is one reason a good lead hen is so important. She'll get everyone wised up. Not having a rooster I count on my lead bird to keep the flock calm & stable. As she's gone broody on me...Myth won't unfortunately. She's a baby killer. She is the most unpopular hen here. But, yes, the knowledge is passed down and it's obvious. It's not just the mums that the next generation learn from, it's the entire tribe. Fat Bird has no direct descendants but you can see the youngsters learning from her. Real easy things to spot like good cover routes from A to B.
Lots of stuff regarding the other creatures here and me. Jenny the Muscovy duck who isn't one to mess with cuts Fat Bird more slack than any of the others including the roosters.
Other free rangers with non game fowl type flocks have reported it takes two generations to wise up. The first generation gets heavily predated, later generations fare much better.
