Riddle Thread

I haven't read this whole thread so apologies if this old well know puzzler has already been posted.

As I was going to St. Ives,
I met a man with seven wives.
Each wife had seven sacks
with seven cats upon their backs.
Every cat had seven kits,
tiny things just little bits.
Man, cats, kits and wives;
how many were going to St. Ives?

We are very little creatures;
all of us have different features.
One of us in glass is set;
one of us you'll find in jet.
Another you may see in tin,
and a fourth is boxed within.
If the fifth you should pursue,
it can never fly from you.
What are we?

A famous magician claims to be able to throw a ping pong ball so that it would go a short distance, come to a complete stop, and then reverse itself. He also added that he would not bounce the ball off any object or tie anything to it. How could he perform this trick?
