My husband says a farmer once told him an easy way to sex a very small chick ( like a couple days old) was to look at its beak. If it had a flat round beak it would be female, and if it had a small ridge it would be a boy?

Has anyone ever heard of this? I know females can have combs as well, but all but 3 have smooth beaks. They are all mud bloods so I can't use breed as an indicator.

If he's right that would mean I managed to only get 3 roosters out of a straight run of 15. That'd be awesome.

a few have very defined large ridges and the the rest are smoother with almost no ridge.

They all have a bit of a comb, just a few are very distinct. Just wondering if it made a difference :) Hubby still swears he's right though, so I guess we'll see in a month or so hehe

Chicks vary depending on breed, so a slight difference between them is gonna happen.

What breeds do you have?

Did this method prove accurate?
