We have a kindergarten class and we had a little guy hatch last night. My custodian called me at home to tell me that the inner membrane was stuck to him...so I went in, read up on here and other sites and decided to warm him up under the light and dab some water on him. The membrane came off easily. I put him back in the incubator and hoped for the best. We got there this morning. He was almost dry, had/has a loud peep but curled toes. I don't have a pic of his toes, but...we did look up what to do and made him so shoes! Please take a look and tell us if it looks good! Thank you!

You did a really good job! :) we had to make those for one of our baby chicks as well. If there are any other babies you may want to seperate them so he doesn't get trampled by the others because its harder for them to get around with shoes on their little feet.

Thank you! I hatched 4 chickens, and I have 6 other baby pheasants, so the other teacher took this little guy home. We tried to put him in with the others and they tried to peck at him right away. Do you think he might have riboflavin deficiency? He seems really healthy except he can't walk!!!

Oh! And how long do we keep these on? Thanks for your help!! This is a first for me! I've never hatched or owned chicks! (except when I was a young kid)

We checked ours every few days. In about and week and a half to 2 weeks. Mine was a little older than yours so hopefully yours will heal quicker. If they don't look better in a few days then put the Splints back on. Make sure you are keeping him very warm. If he is having trouble walking make sure he is able to get water and food. They can dehydrate quickly at this age. I don't know about a riboflavin defiency, but it might be a good idea to give him to give him some vitamins. I give mine poly-vi-sol. It worked wonders for my baby chicks. It's made by enfamil and you can get it at any drug store or wal mart. Just make sure you get the one that's iron free. I mix some in their water. But if I have one that's not feeling so good I give them a few drops of the straight vitamins as well. I hope he heals up soon. Please keep me updated. :)
