Hi there, I recently purchased a male ring neck! I do not know how old he is, nor if he was used for breeding. The people at the feed store just told me that the gentlemen who brought him in for consignment sale, had brought him in that morning. It has a peeper (?) the thing on the beak/nose. And when I took him out of the cage it was evident not much handling had taken place. I wish I wouldn't have jumped into buying him so quickly but he is just so gorgeous. I though he would make a nice addition to my flock of other poultry as a lawn ornament. But after speaking to a few people I was told that would be impossible. Now I am sad, we may just have to eat him as I can't build him his own enclosure, then to try to find him some hens to make him happy! well he is a beautiful bird, my friend suggested we eat him and have him taxidermist.

Do you have any insight? I spent $30 on him, is that too much or just about right, he is full grown from the looks of it, and has some small spurs.
Ill get a pic

@FaerieChicken ,

I'm assuming some things in this response, but based on the people saying it's "impossible" of having a male Ringneck with your chickens? If that's the case, well it's not "impossible" but it is not advised because of a disease known as "blackhead." It's essentially a protozoan, a living single-celled animal that essentially acts like a parasite. When you place turkeys and pheasants with chickens, you run this risk.

That being said, I've known of people keeping them together that frequently de-worm, etc etc. so it isn't "impossible," but like I said, not advised. That aside, whenever you plan on creating a multiflock scenario, (mixing i.e. ducks, pheasants, chickens, turkeys, quail) altogether in one enclosure, you may be setting up a recipe for failure. Are the breeds / species less aggressive or not? You may create a scenario where fighting 'til death occurs. To alleviate this, do you have quiet areas for birds to escape hostility? Do you know which breeds / species are more compatible? What kind of chickens do you have out of curiosity? Is the food / water all in one spot, or in many spots throughout the pen / coop?

$30 may be fair price depending on age. Some may say you might of paid a bit more than what you could have. It also depends on what type of Ringneck pheasant you have because there are other subspecies. You can see some examples listed at this link: https://www.beautyofbirds.com/commonpheasants.html

So really the decision is up to you whether you have a supreme dining experience or not. You're probably not looking at much meat as well so you may have to roast something else. Hopefully that helps!

Also much they same as turkeys and some other fowl and they should have a higher protein feed than chicken layer feed, such as game bird feed which is higher protein. The peepers are for to hold down aggression especially when there are other males. Eventually predators got my birds. First a bobcat dug under the fence and killed several then a fox. They wouldn't use the coop but I had some branches for them in their pen. Back then I didn't have electric wires around my coops and pens which I do now as well as heavy duty netting over all of the pens. Eventually we let them out and they stuck around and roosted in the trees.
