Well the only question I now have is if anyone has any melanistic pullet/hens available. I lost my only one yesterday

If not, does anyone need a melanistic cockerel? He's 12-14 weeks old. I don't want him to be alone, his cries are sad

Here is one of my boy and a couple of his girls, I have PLENTY more, as I am into photography and they are so darn photogenic but I have been busy lately lol. I am waiting on a bid war to finish on ebay so I can get some melanistic eggs ;D yay!

Wow those photos were awesome. Your group is king of colors.It must take a lot of time, planning etc. to get all that done. Those varicolors were the best to me. I am just getting into pheasants so seeing these was a treat. Thank you for sharing! A

I am thinking of buying just a few ringneck pheasant chicks to raise and release in the backyard, which is a 2700 acre park reserve. We regularly have wild pheasants visiting around the bird feeder and I throw corn to them but I thought it would be nice to have some tamer ones hanging around. The only facility I would have for the chicks once they are out of the brooder is an old dog kennel which is about 8x8. We would reinforce the chainlink with chicken wire and hardware cloth and cover half with a tarp. Do they need a coop besides, to go into at night? I would have a roost in the kennel run. Would this arrangement work until I release them at 20 weeks? Should I also have an electric net fence around it? I assume pheasants don't "freerange" and once you let them out, they're basically gone, or would they come back to the coop at night? Such a newby, I'm a pre-newby! Love the photos!

eta And how many can I safely raise to 20 weeks in an 8x8 space? Thanks!

Sorry to tell you this Grit, it sounds like fun but the truth is, that unless you have a permit (I would check with your local DNR office) in pretty much MOST states it is highly illegal to release any wild game animal and even if you were to say "hey I was free ranging and they flew away" it would be considered releasing, and you could get into quite a bit of trouble. So before investing in the chicks find out if it is okay to do that. By releasing without the proper vaccinations, paperwork, etc you may be risking the local population and the birds that you release. Good luck.
