The DNR gentleman called me back today and I told him my idea. His response was that the foxes and great horned owls would certainly appreciate it.

He said that of the 100,000 pheasants released in MN every year he figures probably 90% are predator food right away because they're not native and are farm raised and over time have lost the wild instincts they need to protect themselves(paraphrasing). He also said it is not illegal to release ringnecked pheasants in Mn but discouraged me from doing it as being a waste of money and effort.

ah well, maybe I'll have a big pen when I retire and have more time.

I always though coyotes were probably the main predator until I was told by a conservation officer that in my area it is not possible to get pheasants established in the wild due to all the hawks. He said they were the biggest predators here.

I had no idea there were so many colors of ringnecks! But then why are all of the wild ones (at least in MN) basically the same color? I really like the pied ringnecks, I have been told that this is the same allele that causes mottling in chickens, is that true?
