to come!

At least she had a happy home and hopefully people that had Skye's offspring would make a tribute to her. She is one beautiful bird!

I hope Suede is not too upset about missing his ladies. How many does he have now? Didn't you still have Skye's daughters?

I don't have any of Skye's kids, only one of Velvet's daughters, Robin. Suede has two ladies, neither of which is typey like the two I lost. I will be putting the two Brahmas back in with him since they can handle his size.

Skye's crop was full of sludge, not impacted with straw or grains. The manipulation, massage, oil, etc, etc, we did for two weeks should have worked, but her crop just quit functioning entirely. Poor sweet girl. She walked around to all the pens to the others she knew, dozed in the warm sunshine, etc, all yesterday afternoon and seemed to say her goodbyes, especially to Suede.

Is it slimey feeling? It may be that her crop stopped working....slowly starving herself. Not sure if it is a genetic fluke.

Oh the Brahmas, surely Suede can HANDLE those big gals without a problem! Didnt the Brahmas belong to Dutch?

Come to think of it, it seems like alot of us lost birds somewhere between two to three years old. Are our chickens getting a shorter life span?

So sad. Like she knew. No need to apologize for loving your birds! It's amazing how attached we become! So sorry to hear about Skye.

One question if you don't mind. Does a loose swingy crop tend to be problematic? And what would cause it to quit functioning?

I didn't handle the stuff from her crop, but it doesn't look that slimy, really. I've lost alot over the last couple of years, but most of them to internal laying. Just the blue Orps have had crop issues so far. The Brahmas are in the laying flock, of which Dutch was the leader, but I have removed Dutch to the little Firetower with the BR hens, so he doesn't have any more than the few I've given him. I think hatchery birds, especially the most common breeds sold by them, are definitely limited in their lifespan these days. They are bred to lay like gangbusters without a break.

Oh Cyn, I am so very sorry about Skye.

She was a beautifull girl. I , like you, will never appologise for crying at the loss of a chicken. I recently lost Mr C. One of my favorite roosters. He was 4 yrs old..and molting just took its toll. He quit roosting about 3 weeks before he passed, just sleeping on the floor. He went peacefully, in my arms..me crying, and singing to him. Its hard...loseing a friend.

I'm sorry Cyn.

It's so tough to watch them get sick and know there's nothing else we can do.
