Such a sad and tragic event today. Indy Car driver Dan Wheldon crashed today with 14 others and he passed away from his injuries. 33 years old with a 2 year old and 7 month old. Three others were injured, but expected to recover quickly. He won the Indy 500 a few months back, and his number was posted today at number 1 when all decided to stop the race and place him first.

My boyfriend literally just showed me the video of the wreck.

So sad.

The children and I are so sad, he was one of our favorite drivers. We saw him win the Indy 500 this year....very talented driver and also friendly and not stuck up. Praying for his family.

Prayers for his friends and family. Very talented man, passing too young and his poor family...

I clicked over right after the wreck and knew almost immediately that something bad had happened. To see Helio in his car crying like that was heart breaking. A sad day indeed.

Indy cars and prototypes are my favorite types of car racing. I was also watching the race when it happened and I think that a major contributing problem was that 34 cars on that track seemed a few too many. Dan Wheldon was a great driver and it is obvious from the pictures that he had no way to avoid the crash. I am certain that the Indy car circuit is going to see same major changes, I just hope that this tragic event does not also mean the end to this type of racing.

Sad reality is IndyCars do not need to be running on high speed banked ovals. Look at Greg Moore if you need another example. Look at the mess that is Texas Motor Speedway and Indy/CART cars. Don't think we'll see them losing the ovals anytime soon due to the Indy 500, but geesh, I can't watch them. Give me the road courses any day, dangerous still - Alex Zanardi for example - but they just don't seem to be as bad because you don't have the typical bunching up of the cars, and a wheel touch sets up a change reaction.
