RIP Forrest

It has been cooler today a cold front is moving through and has brought us much needed rain and cloudy skies. After a night and early morning of excessive heat indexes. If Forrest could have held on a little while longer he would have got relief. Its been eerily quiet in the chicken yard today. I think everyone and not just the ones in the bantam coop knows hes gone.A little while ago I was out with the chickens. My LF that I let free range in the yard was at one point all lined up along the bantam run.Mai-Ling and Hop Sing, Forrest's hatchmates seem sad. When I brought out peas they ate but not with the excitement they usually do when I bring treats. This heat is not over yet. We just get a couple days repieve, then back into it. August isnt even here yet. After last winter I never tought I'd say this but I'll be glad to see summer gone. I am hoping this is the one and only heat death we get this summer. I have 2 baby cochins in the brooder in the house right now I sure wish I knew if one of them was Forrest's, but sadly I think they are Hop Sing's. He is the dominate in the pen. Thank you for all the hugs and kind words. It means alot. I have been crying alot today and I know only my friends here understand what I feel. People who dont have chickens dont.

so cute chicken you had in the pic.

i lost a few chickens too, but I didn't have a cam then.

sorry to hear about your loss.

i seen a few dead ones right away. A dog attacked 4 Pekin ducks, 2 roosters and like 9 hens the same night once.
This morning I went out to find my cockrel Forrest dead. It has been so oppressively hot here. I have tried everything to keep them cool. Fans in the coop, changing waters hosing down the run and coops, but guess in this heat it wasnt enough for Forrest. Forrest was hatched in January. His eggs came to me in the December Eggs Swap. When he was hatched he couldnt walk for the first 3 days. His legs just would not work. I told DH that I thought we needed to cull him if he wasnt better the next day, but when I went to check on him that morning he was up running around.DD Named him Forrest Gump. He was always a little smaller than his brother Hop Sing. I know that Cochins do not do well in the heat, So I had been trying to keep them cool. I noticed yesterday he was drooping his wings a little but didnt seem really in distress. He didnt have any signs of anything respriatory. I know that heat accumulates so I am just sure that is what took him. So I was just wanting to give him a farewell on here. Rest my dear little boy We love you and will miss you.
