RIP Laddie----Very sad-----Going to have to put a horse down

Ed, I am so sorry to hear about Greg and your horse so sorry that your family is going through this, I know exactly what your going through and exactly what your feeling, I just went through the same thing last month with my favorite stallion. You asked in a previous post about someone to make something for you from the mane and tail hair that you saved. I know that she is in the middle of a move so it will take her a while but if you will get in touch with Cetawin here on BYC she might be able to help you out. She is going to be making me something from My horses mane and tail hair once she is through with her move. Just thought I would at least give you her name and let you know how sorry I am for your loss.

Ed, my heart goes out to you and Greg. It truly is one of the hardest things we have to do when we bring animals into our life. I've gone through this a couple of times, and if it's at all possible, don't watch them moving Laddie. When they moved our beloved Folly I was on the ground sobbing from it. When my friend's horse was put down, I made her stay in the barn while I helped lay him out. I think the service you're planning is beautiful. I always braided something into their mane that symbolized them along with a feather to help them into the spirit world. I, too, placed favorite treats with them. And later, when it wasn't so difficult, I planted wild roses over their graves. I'm glad you are letting your nephew be a part of it - ask him if there is anything special he would like to do or say. I'm sorry you all have to go through this, and am sending you peaceful thoughts that your hearts may be eased.

Ed that plan sounds wonderful and YES plant some sort of tree over his grave, it will remind you of him every time you see that tree.

I have to give you a bit of humor though. My sister's dog passed several years ago, one that had "been in the family" for several years. We had a burial at my parents farm where the dog loved to run and chase rabbits, etc. The Vet came, my sister's family, both of my brothers family, my family, mom and dad...you get the picture. Well anyway, we had a 4 wheeler which my dad, in his infinite humor, dubbed "the family car" so he made several trips from the house to the "Graveyard" to get the whole clan up to the burial site. A few words were said and "Chuckie" was buried, my sister asked if anyone else had anything else to add, my nephew (7 at the time) spoke up and said, "Well all I have to say is........ when you are dead, you're dead!" Then complete silence until we all broke up giggling our heads off. That was all he said. It really broke the tension and was super hilarious at such a sad sad occasion. (and has never been let go of since. It is brought up several times throughout the years!)

I just hope your day today is spent with the people you love and surround yourself with God's love. It will be ok and God will be there to help you all get through this.

Oh Ed I am so sorry for you all. I have had to PTS two horses in the last 3 yrs and it is truely a heart breaking decision every time. You are a great person that you could make that decision for Laddie and he is no longer in pain. Founder is such a cruel condition. You all will be in my thoughts....

The hardest thing in the world is to have the strength to know when it is time to let them go

Been there a couple times in the last couple of years with Horses, it hurts deep but at least they are not hurting any longer.

Know that Laddie is now Pain Free , Hang in there.

I had some things made with the tail from my Show Gelding, google Treasured Tails, she does an awesome job.

So sorry to hear about Laddie. We had to put our old mare down (35) a few years ago on Easter. Not a Easter goes by that the family doen't mention Sugar. There was no backhoe so we had to dig the (very big) hole ourselves by hand. Ask Thomas how much he wants to see, kids will amaze you sometimes. My daughter was ther for the whole thing and she says she would not have missed it for nothing.
The service sounds beautiful.
Our old Sugar will keep Laddie company, she was the most gentle horse I have ever known.

This is the Poem I wrote after I had to put Dolly down, I hope you can find some comfort in it:

The other night I had a dream
I saw a beautiful green pasture and a lovely stream
You were there beside me as you had been for many years....
You were looking off in the distance, in your eyes I saw the tears
I saw someone approaching and realized it was God, he was not alone
He had many others with him that we both had known

Though my heart was breaking, I knew that this was fair
God reached out his hand, I handed him the lead,
you followed , ever gentle, like a faithful steed.
On the other side, you did not hurt again
God came to take you home
I'll see you again my Faithful Friend
