My poor girl just passed away about an hour ago. Marigold was such a sweet girl. A beautiful gold bantam cochin x silkie mix. Only 2 years old. This Saturday night I picked her up to give her a tomato away from the tomato thieves (every other chicken) I noticed she had a prolapsed vent. It didn't look as bad as some I've seen online but I took her inside soaked her and tried to treat it. It was my first time ever. It looked better after I was done. Then later that night she just kept straining and it all came out again and more. I tried again. Same thing on Sun. At which it wouldn't go back in because she was constantly pushing. Monday (today) morning I called the vet and made an appointment for today. As I went in the bathroom to get her to go to the vet I found her dead. From everything I read on prolapsed vents, this doesn't make sense. What happened? I feel horrible. The only vet anywhere near me that takes chickens isn't open on the weekend but I still feel I failed her and now I'm scared of it happening again. What went wrong?

Ohhhh, I am so sorry for your lost girl. The loss alone is bad enough, but to feel you may have failed her is making things so much harder for you.

I think time is our friend in these circumstances. And, if I may say so, you should give yourself some credit for doing everything you could. Look at your brave willingness when it came to tucking things back where they belong. You'll have that experience and skill going forward with the rest of your girls.

Marigold was aware of your love. And I bet you are feeling hers right now. :hugs

Oh, absolutely.

Prolapsed vent is a horrible thing.
You did an awesome job.
I thought one of my girls was getting a minor prolapse a month ago. I burst into tears on the spot. I would not have been able to do what you did. (Thankfully the hen did not need my assistance after all)

I'm so sorry for your loss. It's tough.
It sounds like you gave her a great life.
