RIP young Joe...:(

So sorry, I had to rehome one of my dogs because she kept killing my chickens.

Had it happen to me as well. Fifteen killed by stray pitbull the first time. Fourteen by my eskimo spitz the second. Eboni was wanting to play with them after she found a way into their coop. I was so angry with her I wouldn't allow her indoors for weeks.

Husband bought me some red stars a few weeks later and I let Eboni come back inside. She ran in front of my son's car one day as he was pulling into our driveway. The was no way for him to not hit her. I miss her still.

I hope your pain over losing Lil Joe will soon pass. It's amazing how quickly one can become so attached to any critter.

A new roo will be low on the pecking order until he gets some size. I introduced one last year, it all worked out just fine.

Sorry about your loss

I'm sorry about your little chick, but the dog was just being a dog.

I just got into chickens. I have 4 week old RIRs.

I also have 4 dogs, and 3 cats.
I know it's my responsibility to keep them apart.

Thank you all for you comments- spent some extra time with the girls, they like sitting and watching out the window, one positive, hubby now is taking the predator-proof aspects of the coop-under construction alot more seriously- which we are just starting on- yes, the dog had been let in and i was unaware of it- and yes i have forgiven him, but he needs to understand my chickens are like all the other birds in the house- off limits...not sure why chickens are different for him- he is lab/heeler mix-

wow- i think that would kill me- to loose that many- yes i get very attached to my animals, and this morning am better, but it really was a wakeup call- i need to really work with that dog, so the chickens can be safe, free ranging wasn't something i was considering, even more so now

I as well have had that same experience with my dogs and let me tell you I was darn close to placing the dogs, but just couldn't. Accidents happen and now I take extra precaution when they're out. I feel for you, I lost a couple of my Favorite hens, one being a sweet little silkie, but forgive your doggy . In some dogs it's just instinct to chase after a little critter, they can't help themselves....

I am so sorry about Joe!

I am getting chicks for the first time next week and I own 3 dogs and a cat and I know it is going to be a lot of work to make sure everyone is safe. I did get a bunny last week and they seem to be ok with her but I know I could never trust them alone. Animals are animals and just so unpredictable.......well us humans are too!!!

I'm so glad my cats aren't interested... the neighbors dog however... I cringe to think (the dog is mean to begin with!) I am so sorry for the loss of your little roo. I felt bad when one got lost in transit, I can't imagine how it is going to feel when I lose one I've raised
