Three days ago, something ripped out my e.eggers tail.We sponged off area then put on blu-kote spray. It seems lie she is plucking/pecking off the feathers around it herself and it looks more ,..."popped out, swollen and weepy".THere is a yellow bump showing now also. Are we supposed to put anything else but blu-kote on?Also, she is seperated from others. Will she be accepted back into flock? The only thing we are sure about is that what ever ripped her tail out,did it thru the run,as the whole clump of feathers was outside the fencing. Thanks in advance!

Sounds like an infection is starting. Give her a gentle warm bath and try to clean her up as good as you can. If you don't have any betadine get some at the pharmacy. Some of the feed stores carry it also but usually more expensive. Afterr she is washed make a dilute betadine solution out of warm water and the betadine. Make it the color of strong tea. Soak your poor girl for a minute and then dry gently. If there are any feathers sticking to the wounded area cut them off. Dry gently and apply neosporin ointment with out the pain relief ingredient. Bandage loosley with non stick gauze and tape if necessary.

Clean this way once a day and you might want to start on penicillin. If she is getting an abcess it must be drained.

Thanks for your help!!!!!

Clean, like suggested above. The yellow lump is her oil gland, keep an eye on it so it doesn't get infected. If she continues to pluck her own feathers and you can't sew a chicken saddle, then you can make her a head cone out of a milk carton, cardboard or even fold some paper towels together to stiffen it and then wrap loosley, but close around her neck, then put some tape to keep it together. This will prevent her from turning her head. Make it as light as you can.
