Hi :+)

We have two RIR and an Australorp; you can see them below. All three are currently 18 weeks (as of second week of May). Left to right we have 'Foxy', 'Florence' (or possible Lawrence) and 'Lucille Ball'... though they all answer to 'chickies'. So far we have loved having them, they have such funny personalities.. but we can't figure out if all three are hens.

You'll have to bare with me as I am new to chickens and I might muddle up terminology etc.

Florence (and the machine) in the middle there has always been a bit on the heavy side, making us consider (s)he being a roo. However comb/wattle aren't bigger, if anything they are slightly smaller than that of Lucille. (S)he is slightly taller but the tail feathers look exactly the same and (s)he doesn't have any spike things on the legs, though I am not sure when they come in anyway. No funny gargling or crow attempts.

I've seen people talk about sex in terms of shape or posture but honestly, both of them walk upright at times and slouch at others. I haven't seen either of them do anything different to each other. (Except Florence likes dipping her/his feet in the water while Lucille tries to fly more than Florence... again personality things?).

What do other people think?

(Above theres Florence on the left)

(Above in their temporary run while we renovate, Florence is on the left)
Thanks for your help!!

Regards, Vicky.

Look to be 3 hens to me. I have 2 reds and one is bigger then the other and both are hens. Also have astralops and yours also looks to be a hen.

Thanks for your response! I hope you are right :) We have had 18 weeks of being nervous. Florence has always been on the plump side and back when (s)he was younger and we were Googling differences between hens and roos, she would portray every aspect of a male. E.g. yellow head, no stripe. (s)he seems to becoming more female in appearance now.

If you don't have a roo or more chickens it is possible that when they start the pecking order being she is the biggest, she could stop laying and crow like a rooster establishing her self as the leader. But she will lay before this happens then stop.
