I have 36 eggs in the bator now due on Jan 27th. I have Plymoth barred rocks and RIR's. I also have one EE who might be a roo. I ordered straight pullets, but this one looks different from the rest and his developing comb is so much brighter. Anyway, I will be keeping 2 roosters. Which breed tends to have the better personalities and is calmer? This will be my first time with a rooster. I have 3 laying hens right now, 12 EE's that are 2 months old. Thanks for the advice:D

Barred Rocks, hands down! Speckledhen (Cyn) will tell you the same. I've had both and though my RIR roo seemed to be a sweetheart for the longest time, he turned very nasty at 6 months old. If he saw my 3 year old in the yard, he immediately chased her down to flog her. Then he started in on all the older kids. Then I learned that RIR roos are just that way. I'm not saying that there aren't some good ones out there, but I will say they are few and far between!

As far as the Barred Rocks go, they seem to be pretty mellow natured and nice boys for the most part. Cyn has had several that are just big sweethearts starting with Hawkeye. Then his son Zane, Dutch isn't bad either. Hopefully she'll weigh in on this as well. My BR roo never tried to hurt anyone either. Just a good boy all around!

Hope this helps some.

Wow, Usually when someone asks a question like this you get a lot of answers. Not today.
OK, then barred rock it is.

Thanks for the info. My chickens are free range all day until I shut them in the coop at night. I definately don't want a bird we have to be on the look out for.

Barred rock in the coop and RIR in the pot!

hi, this is my first time posting so i'm not sure i'm in the right place.
i have been keeping some hens and rooster for almost 2 years now.
my flock consists of 2 buff orpingtons, 4 rir, and 4 gold comet hens.
i have one rooster that was given to me by a friend. he is a white leghorn, about 3 yrs old.
my question is.. should i get a different rooster? if i let a couple of the hens hatch out some chicks this summer, what kind of chickens will i end up with?
also..i really hate snakes and dread the day i see one in the coop.
is there anything to keep them away?
thanks
