RIR Breed Thread

I have 6, 3 month old RIR's.
Three of them are starting to get these green/blue looking color in some of their feathers.
Is this normal, or are these the roo's? What is it called?

The Black in the tail in normal but the Black you see in his wing in this picture is not normal for a pure R.I. Red.
What I looks like to me is that you have a Production Red Rooster.

The wings have been clipped once so they still look a little funny from it but I do believe it's still production RIR

Looks like two Roosters to me. How old?

That set of pics is of the same pullet, right at POL should be laying eggs at this point looks like too me. If you'll notice there are no sex feathers(pointed/ shiny feathers) in the neck wing bows or saddles and most definitely not in the tail. at this age there should be long sickles in the tail too.

Question for all you long time keeper of rir...how old does a rooster need to be to be considered mature (as in beyond the jerk stage and behaving like a gentleman)? I ask this because this is our first year with a rir/sexlink/br flock. They are hatchery birds but look like good stock (it is a small hatchery we got them from) as I have been reading up on standards, etc. We deliberately ordered straightrun of the rir because we want our flock to self sustain. We ended up with 7 boys. However, on tuesday, the roo we were going to keep (Mr. Big, already established as head roo) was jumped by his 5 brothers and killed. (They are all 17 weeks old) We processed the two ringleaders yesterday (as they were just plain mean to everyone and serial rapists) so we are now down to 4 in a flock of 19 girls. 2 more will be going to freezer camp. Since the 3 roos are gone, there seems to be a little more peace in the coop and the girls who wouldnt come out before are now venturing forth. Ideally I would like to get the roos to maturity to see what they will be like and how they are with the girls before I choose who goes.

What do I look for in them as I watch them interact with the flock? I do have one roo who has real nice coloring but he can be a real jerk sometimes. I have been going in and handling each roo, talking to them and holding them so they get used to me and trust me. I do not fear them and make a point of only putting them down when they are calm. If you cant tell, roosters are new to us as well. Any advice about this breed and breed of roosters would be helpful. I love the girls as they are very social with us and excellent foragers. No, I have no interest in showing. I just want to breed the best of what I have so that means the best roos and only hatching from my best hens. Thanks in advance from a newbie to the breed!

(Oh,,,Mr. Big didnt go to waste, He was dinner last night and very delicious too!)

Post from the front and show the comb, and one from the side that shows the feet.

Are you trying to work on getting them to Standard of Perfection? Regardless, Roos from a Show Quality flock will be nicer--they have to be nice to do well in competition. You should try to get some SQ chicks from a breeder next spring. There should be a bunch with them next year.
