RIR Breed Thread

All your birds are so pretty :) do you guys ever have any issues with them being mean or not the friendliest? either to you or other flock members? I used to want some and my dad still does but I'm concerned because I keep hearing that. Seems like it was mostly the roos but I've heard some stories about the hens too

Mine are all friendly but they are only 6 months so I don't know if they change after a year or not but they are friendly now. They free range all day and I put hens in coop at 4pm (6pm in summer) and the 2 roosters go in coop by themselves when it gets dark and I close the coop door. Of course the 2 roos are production and I only have 2 real RIR hens. I have a mixed flock who grew up together as chicks maybe that's why they get along. pecking order was already settled at a young age. I am new and just following what I learn on BYC

I have 1 RIR.Why?Because,RIRs are aggressive breed,
Her names chitchat, but she isn't aggressive because she is pretty low in the pecking order.
My last RIR hens were very mean, and bossy. They'd fight one another,I mean they were lil stickers.

They lay pretty well, and are a hardy breed,(From what I have saw).

Here she is,lil beauty!

Well,young RIRs aren't that aggressive.
Any young bird isn't,(depends though).

Their all RIR's.The hens are selfish.I never hear stories about the roosters, but I suppose mean too.

A lil info.

The RIR makes the Tetra tint and Production red.
They lay exactly like a Tetra tint.

I have a whole coop full of rir and they arent mean or aggressive. I have two brothers, The Duke and Rooster Cogburn, in with 19 hens. Not one of them challenges me nor do they pick or go after each other. When Rooster does try to occasionally tag one of the girls, The Duke simply runs at him and Rooster runs off. No fighting. I can pick up either rooster and do anything I want to them and they let me with no fuss or muss. Trust me when I tell you, I have had mean production red roosters in the past and all of them went to freezer camp in a hurry. Any breed can have mean roosters or hens, if you breed those traits, knowingly or unknowingly. Its just like breeding any other animal. How many breeds of dogs are labled as dangerous because people purposely bred aggressive traits to get better fighting or guard dogs? Please dont condemn the true heritage rir breed. They really are a great layer, have great personalities and when you have good roosters, those guys are the best flock masters.
