One of my Rhode Island Reds laid a goose size egg last week. After several days of contemplation I decided to blow it out and save it . . . simply because it was so large! When poking the first hole in it, I met with solid resistance at about 1/2". This kind of freaked me out! Yikes! A petrified egg yolk?? I gingerly started peeling the end of the shell away. You can look at the pictures to see what I got!
