RIR or Red Star? Almost a month old..

Is there anything wrong with them in general, the words "production Reds" seem to be a dirty word around here...

Not if laying is what you are looking for. My production reds, i.e. the bird in my avatar are from Ideal and are RIR X New Hampshire. Very good layers, in fact when the first started laying, she did not take one day off for the first two months and then rarely for the next few months. Mine are a bit on the aggressive side, but not bad.

Not a thing wrong with them. They're the hatchery answer to the market demand. Folks wanted a red/brown bird, who lays a crapton of eggs, who doesn't eat a ton of feed. Enough demand, and suddenly there's a product! Here, its the production Red hen. They pretty much excel at what they do.
