RIR roo... How does that go?

Is it the RIR and barred rock hen that makes a sexlink? Or the other way around?

My uncle gave me three dozen eggs to put in an incubator and all he has is RIR roos with RIR, Barred Rock and Buff Orpington hens. Will I get anything exciting out of this mix or just a whole bunch of cute mutts?

Yup, a red roo over a silver or barred hen will make sexlinks! So with the RIR roo over the Barred hens you should get black sexlinks, so all chicks are black but the males have a white dot on their heads while the females wont(they may even have a reddish tint to the throat).

So all black chicks you will get out of that batch should be sexlinks(since RIRXRIR=RIR and RIRXBuff Orp= some sort of reddish/buff chicks).

While I'm on the go with "duh" questions.... Anyway you can tell the eggs apart? The top left egg and the bottom second from the left are the same pale brown color. The bottom left and bottom third left are a darker brown and then I have the tan ones that are the second and third from left on top. Pretty much, I'm going in blind right? lol

put em in the bator and let the genetics sort it out. You can not go wrong wiht a RIR roo and barbed rocks or even orps. Every once in a great while we throw barn eggs in the bator and see what happens. We have gotten the coolest birds from this.

Those eggs could be from any of those birds. Shades of brown egg color depend more on the individual hen than the breed. There's no way to tell until they hatch.
