Its a different bird from the original Rhode Island Red. They crossed other breeds into Reds to make The rhode island more for Egg production. All hatcheries care about is fast egg production. Nothing wrong with the bird, just not the original Rhode Island Red Breed. They should be sold as Production Reds.

This happens with most breeds. There is no police running around handing out tickets. There is no registry, like in dogs AKC, to document pedigree. Birds are bred "true to type" or "show true to type" when they are judged to appear up to the Standards written for the breed by the APA or similar poultry organization.

90% of hatchery stock would likely be disqualified if entered to be judged at an APA sanctioned event. Here's a picture of a true to type RIR.

I just saw your tread and you had pictures of high production reds I call them Cherry Eggers they are breed to lay about 275 eggs per pullet year and many commerical poultry farms that have cage layers use them for brown eggs. The have a short life because they lay so hard so quickly many of the females blow out their oviducts not all but many com paired to the old fashion Standard Rhode Island Red that you see that is very dark deep red with rich green tails. The female and the male are true Rhode Island Reds that go back to the 1850s and where very popular in the 1940s and 50s. With the introduction of New Hampshire's and commerical produciton reds the Old Fashion Rhode Island Red kine of went to the way side.

Rhode Island Reds are a dual purpose chicken they lay about 180 egg in the pullet year and have lots of meat on their bone during their young life if you wish to eat them. They are very DOCILE and are very pretty to look at. That's why they are one of the most popular dual purpose breeds next to the true Plymouth Rocks.

Are Rhode Island Red roosters mean? NO NO NO are Production Red roosters mean. Most of them are and many complain to me why is my Rhode Island Red rooster trying to nock me or my children down. When I ask them where they got their Rhode Island Reds from they tell me the feed store. Then I tell them your chickens are mean but they are not Rhode Island Reds.

If you type Rhode Island Red into Bing.com and see the pictures that will show up 95 % of them will be production chickens that have high jacked the name.

Hope this helps you out. 99% of the people on this web site who have Rhode Island Reds have production reds very few have the old Heritage kind that I have been breeding for 30 years.

If you type in Rhode Island Red bantams into your search en-gin you will see the dark deep colored kind because there are no production red bantams.

You have some very nice looking laying chickens enjoy them as they are great egg producers. If people tell you they are not Rhode Island Reds then you know why. bob blosl Past President of the Rhode Island Red Club of America.
