Ive just recently gotten into the chicken owning .. literally 1 week ago...

i started with 3 :

1 Ameraucana
1 Buff Orpington
1 Barred Rock

The barred rock passed
sad.png
she had a problem from the start .. wouldnt grow had pasty butt ever 3 hours (very annoying) i even had to put her in a seperate box so she could sleep as much as she wanted cause the other two were keeping her up ... but thats not the point of this post >>>

So now ive decided to replace here with numbers of chicks im planning on raising them 2 at a time heres my schedule

next friday-
1 Australorp
1 Barred Rock (im gonna try again)

in 3 weeks-
1 Silver Laced Wyandotte
and i dont know??

reason they are seperated is because pet store wont have them in at the same time till end of summer so im just spacing them out ..

So here's the question now .. ive been thinking RIR but i read everywere that they arnt nice and are bullies... but then i read they are the sweetest birds ... so im wondering wat are your opinions on these birds??

By the way these are strickly for pets ... .. need to be nice enough for children almost everyday ... and they are all going to be pullets regardless

We specifically chose RIR pullets to repopulate our flock, as we have found them to be very sweet, inquisitive hens. Ours will sit around the kids in the sandpiles while they're playing.

Just handle them a lot while they're growing up, and they'll be friendly.

Good luck!!

ok thats for your advice RIR it is .. my goal was to have a pretty colorfull coop and i think ive done it

i want docile birds
decent number of eggs 3/week +
good natured
easy to maintain
kinda quite

My RIR's are my favorite 2 of the bunch. They are calm and have great personalities.....and lay beautiful brown eggs. I'm all for RIR's. Actually I am getting more!

i like buttercups. the hens and roos are beautiful. my hens are kinda shy and timid but sweet still. the roos are ok so long as there isnt any other roos

People have widely varying experience with RIR hatchery stock.
I had a flock about 20 years ago and the hens were OK but the roos were awful. I have a few RIR roos now who were bought for the freezer; they are 8 weeks and not hostile but also not friendly.

I hope you get a good batch.

My chicks are a little over a week old, and I can already tell the RIR's have a "bigger" personality, and do seem to bully the white rocks a tad. But, they are also the ones who eagerly jump into my childrens hands and are definitely the favorites.
