Rival chicken gangs

Hi all,

We are renting and the landlords already have a chicken coop with their chickens in the backyard we are leasing.

We would like our own chickens as I think it will get tricky with deciding who gets the eggs who pays for the feed ect so we want to build another coop on the property.

Just wondering if it's a bad idea? will our new chickens fight with our landlords chooks forming rival chooky gangs?

To answer the question... Yes they would have bloody fights so long as they are housed apart. Any time they were out at the same time there would be fights.

Why are the landlords chickens being kept in a yard YOU are paying to rent???
Just seems odd to me.

They have their market garden and their chooks on the property and we get reduced rent. They live up the road with no garden so it works for both of them.

Thats a shame. My kids are really missing having their own chooks, and we are missing the eggs

It can work. Don't get me wrong.
I keep 2 flocks. Only allowing one out into the yard at a time.

If I were to allow both flocks out there would be mayhem and blood for sure.
I have 2 coops with attached runs but free time in the human yard is alternated between the flocks.

You just need to be diligent in not allowing them to be out together.

I have multiple coops and the separate groups tend to mingle with minor skirmishes. Of course it will depend on the individuals involved. Some get along fine, others do not. You could always keep yours penned up to avoid issues.

However before you do anything you need to talk to your landlord. It is their property, not yours, so you need to okay it with him/her/them whether or not you can build any sort of coop and add birds. They may not want additional buildings or extra birds that could introduce potential diseases.

They said they were ok with it before we moved in.

I don't think we could ask them to only come in at certain times and let their chooks out. I think that starts up a potential recipe for eviction, thinking we are hard tenants. I think I would feel too bad having the chooks penned up 24/7.

would ducks and chooks work do you think?

You could treat train them so that getting them back in the coop is easier.
I use a handful of mealworms and always the same scoop. I only give the treats once everyone is in the run. Mine run to the run when they see that scoop now.

I only let mine out when I can be out with them. I stash the scoop of treats just inside the door so they are not left unattended. We have tons of hawks so I don't take chances.

How many acres and what are the resources in terms of cover so flocks can realize some degree of separation? Roosters involved?

You are rapidly approaching time of year when my flocks dissolve and swap members.

The alternation of free-range days would allow persistence of two-flock arrangement.
