"Okay," said Zara. Tait's embarrassing outburst was doing nothing to calm her nerves. She turned and walked urgently back in the direction of Spruce, then stopped and turned to wait for Mercedes to catch up. And hurry forward again, and stop, and watch Mercedes anxiously. And repeat. She knew that Mercedes getting there a few seconds sooner would make no difference but seeing the stranger and the snakebite and seeing him pass out at her feet... It all set her nerves on edge.
Mercedes slowly followed Zara. Tait grabbed her tail. "But Mother," he said, dragging behind, "what if you get bitten too? What if," he choked on something, but Mercedes wasn't sure. Probably tears or something like that, the weirdo. "WHAT IF I LOOSE YOU!"
"Enough of that!" Mercedes yanked her tail away and slapped him in the face, the creep. "I'm going and you're not going to stop me."
Mercedes turned back to Zara. "Keep leading the way, sweetie."

Zara wished Tait would go away. He was only going to be an annoying distraction. "Y-yes, of course," she stammered. After a bit more walking they had finally come to where the strange green tyrant lay. She breathed a sigh of relief when she realized he hadn't moved. Although maybe if it had, she wouldn't have to figure out what to do with him.

Mercedes walked over to the tyrant. He seemed to be sleeping. Strange, if it was the stranger who followed her around everywhere, he would have died by now from the panic alone. She scanned him and quickly located the small bite. Hm, not too bad. She knelt by his side and stuffed her berries unto her mouth, and chewed them into a mushy paste.

"Ah! He's dead! Oh, no, he's dead! What do we do, what do we do?" Tait ran around in circles, claws in the air. This was bad. Very bad! The tyrant looked so young. Too young to be dead. Ah- what if  he died? He was young!
