Rob's First Incubation Attempt - Questions and Journal

Haha. Rob needs to take pics.

I think we can tell them all apart now. The last 2 were looking pretty similar, but I think we've got them figured out now. When I got up an hour ago I didn't see any new pips, but now there's a clear open pip hole in the bigger of the two blue/green eggs! Either the little chick was fast/strong, or the other chicks rolled the egg over and the pip was underneath before... It looks to be pushing pretty energetically so I'm guessing it'll be out in the next few hours!

I'm bummed we missed the zip/hatch of #4 (we were visiting w/family over here and it must have happened quickly!). Hopefully we'll see this one.

So this #5 chick in the blue/green egg seems to have the tip of it's wing sticking out of the pip hole....weird.

BTW, Alana has now named all of them, including the one still hatching.

It's name is Saysa.

Nice first hatch.

The best pics will be the ones of you girls smiling at the flufferbutts.
They are going to remember this experience for their entire lives.

Rob, when I take mine out of the turner I put them in a egg carton. It stops all the rolling around and its less of a mess. Just an idea. Great hatch though. I bet your girls are having a ball!!!!!

The hatched chicks kept tugging at the feathers/appendage of the hatching chick & had started to draw blood, so we thouht it best to remove them prior to the chick actually coming out (assuming she does). We opened the incubator just enough for me to get my arm in, put in a warm damp washcloth & quickly removed the hatched chicks. They are so cute & seem happy to be in their new home. The girls are loving them! I'll post close-ups of each one. BTW, we swapped names for the 1st & 3rd chicks. "Ginger" seemed to fit our #1 better.

"Saysa" is still alive, but doesn't seem to be making a lot of progress on her zipping out yet....though I'm sure she's grateful for a reprieve from the raptorous chicks pulling at her plumage.

Emily, if that chick is drying out in the shell you can use a warm wet papertowel and wrap the egg in it leaving the pip part open - like a snuggy for the egg. It will help keep things moist around the chick.

If the feathers are dry - it might be stuck. You can use a tweezer and just pick off the tinest shell bit and see if the membrane is papery white and dry or moist looking.
