Welcome from Southern California! Agree with Sumi's advice, and a local chicken farmer we met highly recommends Murray McMurray Hatchery. DISCLAIMER: we've never ordered from them, we've purchased our birds from our local feed store and don't know where they come from. Good luck and have fun! It's quite an adventure.
I have been pretty busy getting things together. I got in contact with The Dominique Club of America. They seem like really nice folks, but it seemed like most of the breeders lived pretty far away. So, I decided to take a risk and order them online. I'll definitely let you know what my experience is like! I have 15 chicks coming in the next few days, and I've built a 5x6ft brooder that I'm pretty happy about designing. I have two different lights, feeders, and waterers that will be available to them at all times. (I have extra ones too, so that I can just switch things out while I'm cleaning.) I also have a converted dog crate within the enclosure that will give them a cozy spot to snuggle, as well as a place to roost when they get a bit bigger. The PVC brooder is extremely lightweight, so it can breakdown and be stored in a small space. I can also convert it to a chicken tractor later on, if I want to use it that way.
I'm currently putting together an 8x10 chicken coop as well. Any suggestions about how to design useful manure boxes?
Hi Im in Elma, so not too far from you...anyway, Ive been looking on CL for chicks/chickens and keep coming across a large breeder in Rochester. The number is 360-790-9301...couldnt hurt to call and see what they have You can search the number on craigslist and they always have a huge list of different breeds on each post.
