I have these two beauties that I bought a couple months ago as cuckcoo maran at the local feed store. Somebody told me that they are barred rocks. Can anyone tell me what they are, and how do you tell the difference ? I looked on line, but they pretty much look the same to me.(Miss Lilly had to have her cameo). Boca- front , Bingo- back.

Probably Cuckoo Marans, but I'll leave you to judge, as I'm not sure I can see enough of your birds to tell for certain. Here's how you can tell:

PBRs have yellow skin. CMs have white. (Leg or shank colour is not skin colour. To see the colour of their skin, look at the bottom of their feet.) Yours appear to have white skin/beaks, but the picture doesn't really show a lot of skin.

Cuckoo is the same colour pattern as Barred, but Cuckoo is messier because the bird has fast-growing feathers, which make for uneven striping. Barred chickens should be slow-feathering. Yours look cuckoo.

Most CMs in the US will have lightly feathered legs, conforming to the French standard. Again, your birds aren't showing a lot of leg in the picture.

The US standard also has feathered legs. A lot of hatchery birds don't conform though. I have never seen a quality cuckoo btw all hatchery birds. Because they aren't accepted in the standard.
Shank color is also different for Marans and BR. BR do have yellow shanks while Marans have white ones. There are entirely different genes that control skin and shank color though.

All of the Marans chicks I've seen at TSC and RK have had feathered legs.

I bought "Cuckoo Marans" pullets at TSC a month ago. Clean yellow legs with dark over yellow.

Mine were about 2 months old when I got them. They didn't have any baby feathers to speak of, maybe a little fluff around tail feathers. I'll get more pics in the morning, more of the legs and feet. I'm hoping for the dark brown eggs.

I was hoping for Marans dark brown, too. But, since my "Cuckoo's" seem to be BRs, I just hope my Blue Copper Marans and White Marans will lay dark. I have a Black Copper Marans in the incubator due to hatch this Friday.
I sure hope it does hatch and it's a she, lol.
