Rock salt and chickens

Question, I let my chickens free range even in winter and they follow me around every where, sometimes I have to do them out of my truck to go to work. But yesterday we had an ice storm to which I was entertained by watching my flock skip and slide around the yard. It was fun to watch but it got me worried.

Can I use rock Salt on my walk ways and driveway? If not what can I use, this is just the start of the bad weather season for my area. I won't need salt for the snow but ice and packed snow turns into ice under my tires need melted. Any suggestions?

I would avoid salt for many reasons besides the chickens. I use ordinary sand instead. If a bit of sun hits the sand on the ice it will melt into and roughen the ice surface quite well even without salt.
x2. Salt is caustic on animal paws and I'd have to assume chicken feet too, and is also dangerous if they should decide to start eating it. Sand is a safer choice.
