Rock salt in a shotgun?

Rock salt will work, shell crackers may be a better idea for you. Shellcrackers are shotgun loads that whistle and bang and work well to scare off a lot of critters

I agree with Chook-a-holic as to the purpose of shooting. Rock salt will ruin your shotgun barrel as the humidity in the air will cause the salt to rust your barrel. Additionally the non-aerodynamic shape of the rock salt would limit the pattern and effective range of the shot so much, you'd be better off using the butt end of the gun as a club. Stick to real ammo...if you're worried about penetration, use #9 shot skeet loads.

rock salt is pretty effective out to 25 yards. that's 75 feet. I don't care what these naysayers say, it works. I've got scars from my backside halfway up my back from getting it a few times

I've also used it. Basically you empty either birdshot or buckshot out, refill with rock salt and thats that.

As far as using number 9... well yeah, that works, but now you have PROOF that you shot something. Rock salt disolves inside the flesh hurting like a son of a gun. Do I care if it's not good for the barrel? Naw, because as a responsible gun owner, I clean my guns after I use them.
